Could a muscle relaxant make newborn intubation safer?
NCT ID NCT07650552
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jul 01, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether adding a muscle relaxant (rocuronium) to standard painkiller (fentanyl) helps doctors place breathing tubes in newborns on the first try, without causing dangerous drops in oxygen or heart rate. About 102 premature or sick babies in a Brazilian NICU will take part. The goal is to improve a common procedure that currently fails about half the time.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
rocuronium (a muscle relaxant) and fentanyl (a painkiller)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could make breathing tube placement safer and more successful for fragile newborns, reducing complications.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase trial (102 babies) in a single hospital, so results may not apply everywhere. Muscle relaxants carry risks like prolonged paralysis, though a reversal drug is available.
