Apnea of prematurity is a developmental disorder affecting premature infants, likely secondary to an immaturity of respiratory control resulting in idiopathic pauses in breathing often associated with reduced heart rate and arterial blood oxygen levels. It may be exacerbated by concurrent neonatal diseases.
