Why do some older adults skip Fall-Prevention exercise?
NCT ID NCT06100445
First seen Sep 23, 2026 · Last updated Sep 24, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
Researchers interview people over 60 who are at risk of falls and have been referred to musculoskeletal physiotherapy. The study asks what makes home exercise easier or harder, which formats people prefer, and whether they can discuss fall risk with health professionals. The goal is to understand how services might better support exercise that reduces falls in this group.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- semi-structured interviews about exercise and falls
- What this could lead to
- If the interviews reveal clear barriers and preferences, physiotherapy services could design home exercise plans that more people over 60 actually stick with, which may help lower fall risk.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small interview study of up to ten people in one area, so its themes may not reflect the views of older adults elsewhere. It tests no treatment and cannot prove that any exercise approach prevents falls.

Who is studied
This is a single centre study, based at Rossendale Health Centre. The MSK Physiotherapy Service is part of an integrated model in East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust (ELHT) for managing musculoskeletal, rheumatology, orthopaedic and pain conditions (https://elht.nhs.uk/services/integrated-msk-pain-and-rheumatology-service). The aim is to deliver the highest quality of care and support for patients with musculoskeletal conditions. This includes patients who have been referred following falls resulting in fractures or soft tissue injuries, and painful long-term conditions such as osteoarthritis which can impact mobility. A third of the caseload in MSK physiotherapy consists of patients over the age of 60.
