Eye scans may predict who loses sight from macular degeneration
NCT ID NCT00734487
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study looked at 470 people with age-related macular degeneration (AMD) to see if special eye scans (SDOCT) can predict vision loss and disease worsening. Participants were already in the AREDS 2 trial and had moderate to high risk of progression. Researchers tracked changes in the retina over time to find early warning signs of advanced AMD.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this could help doctors predict who will lose vision from macular degeneration, allowing earlier monitoring or treatment.
What could go wrong
This is an observational study, not a treatment trial. It may not find clear predictors, and results may not apply to all patients.
