First seen May 05, 2026 · Last updated Jun 22, 2026 · Updated 10 times

Summary

This study is testing whether taking an antibiotic pill for 7 days after surgery to fix a broken leg, ankle, or foot can lower the chance of wound infection in adults with poorly controlled diabetes. About 40 participants will either receive the antibiotic or standard care (no extra antibiotics). Researchers will track infections and side effects for 90 days after surgery.

If it works, this could point toward a simple way to prevent wound infections after fracture surgery in people with diabetes.

What could go wrong

This is a small pilot study with only 40 participants, so results may not apply broadly. Antibiotics can cause side effects like stomach upset or allergic reactions.
