Pedaling while dialyzing: new study tests exercise to fight muscle wasting in kidney patients
NCT ID NCT07151742
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether a 12-week exercise program done during dialysis can improve muscle oxygen levels and dialysis quality in kidney patients who also have muscle loss (sarcopenia). About 40 patients will either exercise on a bike and do resistance moves during their first two hours of dialysis, or continue usual care. Researchers will measure muscle oxygen, dialysis effectiveness, strength, and quality of life before and after the program.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- intradialytic combined exercise program (aerobic cycling and resistance training)
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could offer a simple, drug-free way to improve muscle health and dialysis effectiveness for kidney patients.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-stage trial with only 40 participants. The exercise program may be too demanding for some patients, and results may not apply to all kidney patients.
