Pedaling while dialyzing: simple exercise may boost heart function in kidney patients

NCT ID NCT07507981

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tested whether a six-month aerobic exercise program done during dialysis sessions could improve heart function in people with end-stage kidney disease. Eighteen adults on hemodialysis pedaled a stationary bike for 30 minutes, three times a week, while receiving treatment. Researchers measured heart pumping strength before and after the program to see if exercise made a difference.

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a simple, drug-free way to protect the heart in people on dialysis.

What could go wrong

This is a very small, single-group study with no comparison group, so results may be due to chance or other factors. It only included stable patients, so findings may not apply to everyone.
