Blood test could reveal hidden cancer spread in colorectal patients

NCT ID NCT07224724

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jul 08, 2026 · Updated 3 times

Summary

The EXELION study is testing a new blood test that looks for tiny particles called exosomal microRNAs to find out if colorectal cancer has spread beyond the liver. Current scans often miss small or hidden metastases, which can affect treatment options. The study will enroll 500 adults with metastatic colorectal cancer to see how accurate this liquid biopsy is compared to standard imaging.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
exosomal microRNA panel measured in blood
What this could lead to
If successful, this blood test could help doctors find small cancer spread that scans miss, leading to better treatment choices and possibly more patients eligible for surgery.
What could go wrong
This is an early-stage study focused on developing and testing the test's accuracy. It may not prove better than current imaging, and the test is not yet available for routine use.
