New drug combo aims to stop liver cancer recurrence in transplant patients

NCT ID NCT02081755

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether the drug everolimus can lower the risk of liver cancer coming back after a liver transplant in patients with high-risk hepatocellular carcinoma. About 336 adults who have just received a transplant will be randomly assigned to take everolimus plus tacrolimus or standard immunosuppressants. The main goal is to see how long patients live without their cancer returning.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Everolimus (also known as Zortress or Afinitor)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could point toward a way to lower the chance of liver cancer coming back after a transplant, helping patients live longer without recurrence.

What could go wrong

This is a phase 4 study, so the drug is already approved, but it's still uncertain if everolimus will outperform standard treatments. Risks include side effects like infections, kidney problems, and wound healing issues.
