Could a hormone pill reignite desire? new trial tests estetrol for postmenopausal sexual arousal
NCT ID NCT06308614
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This phase 2 trial tested whether estetrol (E4), a hormone pill, can help postmenopausal women with female sexual arousal disorder. 82 women took either estetrol or a placebo for 12 weeks. Researchers measured changes in sexual arousal and distress to see if the drug works better than a dummy pill.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
estetrol (E4)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could point toward a hormone-based treatment for sexual arousal difficulties in postmenopausal women.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase proof-of-concept study with only 82 participants. The results may not show a clear benefit over placebo, and more research would be needed.
