New nerve block could slash opioid use after kidney stone surgery

NCT ID NCT05024344

First seen May 01, 2026 · Last updated May 01, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether a specific nerve block (erector spinae plane block) can reduce pain and the need for opioid painkillers after percutaneous nephrolithotomy, a surgery to remove large kidney stones. About 128 adults undergoing this surgery will be randomly assigned to receive either the nerve block or a saline placebo. Researchers will measure opioid use and pain scores in the first 24 hours after surgery.
