New nerve block could slash morphine use after back surgery
NCT ID NCT04925882
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This study tested whether a specific nerve block, called an erector spinae plane block, can lower the amount of morphine patients need after lumbar spine surgery. 100 adults having surgery for herniated discs or spinal stenosis were included. The block is given under ultrasound guidance before surgery, and the main goal was to measure morphine use in the first 72 hours after the operation.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
erector spinae plane block (a nerve block procedure using anesthetic injection)
What this could lead to
If effective, this nerve block could reduce the need for morphine after lumbar surgery, leading to fewer side effects and faster recovery.
What could go wrong
This is a small, single-center study. The block may not significantly reduce morphine use, and results may not apply to all spine surgeries.
