Can early UVB and steroids stop vitiligo in its tracks?

NCT ID NCT04843059

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tested whether starting treatment early with UVB light therapy and low-dose steroids can stop vitiligo from spreading and improve skin color return. 51 people with different stages of vitiligo were treated for 6 months. Researchers took skin samples to see how immune cells changed. The goal is to find a way to prevent relapses, which happen in up to half of patients after repigmentation.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

narrowband UVB light therapy and oral steroids (methylprednisolone)

What this could lead to

If successful, this approach could lead to better repigmentation and fewer relapses for people with vitiligo by targeting the immune cells in the skin early.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage study (51 people) without a placebo group, so results may not apply to everyone. Steroids and UVB have side effects, and long-term benefits are uncertain.
