NCT ID NCT07495839

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether equine-assisted therapy (working with horses) can improve mental health and reduce cravings in people recovering from addiction. Twenty-two adults who have completed detox will be randomly assigned to either receive 22 sessions of equine therapy over 24 weeks or standard care. The goal is to see if this approach helps prevent relapse and eases the transition back to daily life.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

equine-assisted therapy (interaction with horses in a therapeutic setting)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could provide a new, non-drug way to help people in recovery manage cravings and reduce relapse risk.

What could go wrong

This is a very small, early-stage study with only 22 participants. The results may not apply to everyone, and the benefits of equine therapy are not yet proven for addiction.
