Can a nerve block make sinus surgery less bloody?

NCT ID NCT03970655

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This pilot study tests whether adding epinephrine to a standard nerve block (pterygopalatine ganglion block) reduces bleeding during functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) in people with chronic rhinosinusitis. Eighty adults undergoing bilateral FESS will receive the nerve block with epinephrine on one side and without on the other, and surgeons will rate bleeding using a standard scale. The goal is to see if this simple addition can improve surgical conditions.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

bupivacaine or ropivacaine with epinephrine plus dexamethasone

What this could lead to

If it works, this could lead to a simple way to reduce bleeding during sinus surgery, making the procedure safer and easier for surgeons.

What could go wrong

This is a small early-phase pilot study, so results may not be conclusive. The effect on bleeding might be small or not clinically meaningful.
