Brain scans seek clues to prevent sudden death in epilepsy

NCT ID NCT07249034

First seen Jan 05, 2026 · Last updated Jun 11, 2026 · Updated 21 times

Summary

This study looks at how epilepsy changes certain brain areas that control breathing and waking up. Researchers will scan the brains of 50 people (some with drug-resistant epilepsy and some healthy) using a special PET-MRI machine. They want to see if differences in a brain chemical called adenosine might explain why some people with epilepsy have breathing problems or are at risk for sudden unexpected death (SUDEP). The goal is to understand the problem better, not to test a treatment.
