Could a simple additive to epidurals prevent chronic pain after surgery?
NCT ID NCT07292324
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study looked at whether adding dexmedetomidine to a standard epidural painkiller (bupivacaine) improves pain control for women undergoing gynecologic laparotomy. 62 women received either the standard epidural or one with dexmedetomidine added. Researchers measured pain levels, painkiller use, and inflammation markers for 24 hours after surgery, and checked for chronic pain 3 months later.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Dexmedetomidine (added to bupivacaine epidural)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer better short-term pain relief and lower the chance of long-term pain after gynecologic surgery.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed Phase 4 trial with 62 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. Adding dexmedetomidine may cause side effects like low blood pressure or slow heart rate.
