Could talking directly to teens before surgery ease their pain?
NCT ID NCT04963751
First seen Aug 11, 2026 · Last updated Aug 12, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This trial tests whether giving pre-surgery counseling directly to teenage patients, rather than only to their caregivers, improves their recovery after abdominal gynecologic surgery. Participants aged 9 to 17 are randomly assigned to receive Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) counseling either with their caregiver or with the caregiver only. The study measures pain scores, medication adherence, and how quickly they return to school.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) counseling given either to the patient or to the caregiver
- What this could lead to
- If involving patients directly in pre-surgery counseling improves recovery, it could lead to better pain management and faster return to school for teens after gynecologic surgery.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-stage trial, so results may not apply broadly. The benefit of patient counseling over caregiver counseling is uncertain and may not show a clear difference.
