Smart patches could predict Post-Surgery complications
NCT ID NCT06565559
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study is testing whether wearable sensors on the chest and fingers can detect early signs of patient decline after major surgery. Over 1,300 adults in eight countries will wear the sensors before, during, and after their operation for up to 10 days. The data will be used to design algorithms that might one day alert doctors to complications sooner. For now, the sensor data is only being collected and analyzed—it does not change patient care.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Wearable wireless sensor (chest and finger patches)
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could lead to an early warning system that helps doctors spot complications sooner after surgery, potentially saving lives.
- What could go wrong
- This is an early-stage observational study—sensor data is not used to guide patient care yet. The algorithms developed may not work in real-world settings or may produce too many false alarms.
