Can a paramedic at home replace the ER? new study tests the idea

NCT ID NCT06299774

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tested whether getting emergency care at home is as good as going to the emergency room. 229 adults were randomly assigned to receive care at home from a paramedic and remote doctor, or to go to a standard ER. The main goal was to see how many needed an ER visit or hospital stay within 9 days.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Emergency care at home delivered by a paramedic and remote physician

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show that home-based emergency care is a safe and faster alternative to the ER for some patients.

What could go wrong

This is a small, completed trial with 229 participants, so results may not apply broadly. Home care may not be suitable for all emergencies.
