Can the right electric waveform help bell palsy patients smile again?
NCT ID NCT06573697
First seen Jun 08, 2026
Summary
This study looked at whether different types of electroacupuncture (using low-frequency continuous or discontinuous waves) can improve facial nerve function in people with subacute Bell palsy. 75 adults aged 18-65 with Bell palsy for 1-3 weeks received treatment on specific face points. The goal was to find the best waveform to reduce facial paralysis and improve quality of life.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
electroacupuncture (low-frequency continuous wave and discontinuous wave)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could identify the best electroacupuncture waveform to help people with Bell palsy recover facial movement faster.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed trial with 75 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. Electroacupuncture may cause discomfort or bruising, and not all patients may benefit.
