First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This pilot study tests whether a non-invasive headset that delivers mild electrical stimulation to nerves behind the ear can safely improve sleep in adults who are blind or severely sight impaired. Sixty participants will use the device for 30 minutes a day, five times a week for four weeks, either with active stimulation or a sham (inactive) device. Researchers will measure changes in sleep quality and track any side effects.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Modius Sleep device (electrical vestibular nerve stimulation)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a drug-free, non-invasive way to improve sleep quality in people with visual impairment who often struggle with sleep disorders.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early pilot study with only 60 participants. The device may not prove more effective than a sham, and results may not apply to all visually impaired individuals.
