Can an extra HIV drug flush out the hidden virus?
NCT ID NCT07193875
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This completed Phase 4 trial tested whether adding efavirenz (a standard HIV drug) to a person's usual combination therapy could reduce the size of the hidden HIV reservoir. Seven adults with well-controlled HIV took one extra pill daily for six months. Researchers measured safety and checked for changes in the virus's hiding places in blood and tissue.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Efavirenz 600mg
What this could lead to
If it works, this could point toward a way to reduce the hidden HIV reservoir, potentially making it easier to control the virus long-term.
What could go wrong
This is a very small, early-phase trial with only 7 participants, so results may not apply broadly. Efavirenz can cause side effects like mood changes or rash.
