Blood-filtering therapy may slow lung decline in transplant patients

NCT ID NCT02181257

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This phase 3 trial tests a treatment called extracorporeal photopheresis (ECP) for lung transplant patients who develop bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome (BOS), a form of chronic rejection. ECP involves filtering a patient's blood, treating it with a light-sensitive drug, and returning it to the body. The study aims to see if ECP can slow the decline in lung function or improve survival. About 280 Medicare-eligible adults are enrolled.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Extracorporeal photopheresis (ECP) with methoxsalen

What this could lead to

If successful, ECP could become a standard treatment to slow lung function decline in lung transplant patients with bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome.

What could go wrong

This is a phase 3 trial, but results are not yet final. The treatment is complex and may not work for all patients, and there are risks from the procedure and methoxsalen.
