Can early physiotherapy boost development in NICU babies?
NCT ID NCT07201792
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether starting physiotherapy early in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) helps at-risk infants improve their motor, cognitive, and language development. About 100 babies with conditions like prematurity or birth complications will receive either standard care or a family-based early physiotherapy program. Researchers will track their progress up to 12 months after birth.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
early physiotherapy program (chest physiotherapy, developmental physiotherapy, family education, and positioning techniques)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that starting physiotherapy early in the NICU helps at-risk infants develop better motor, cognitive, and language skills.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial with 100 infants, so results may not apply to all NICU babies. The benefits seen may be short-term or not significant.
