Heart ultrasound may predict defibrillator need after heart attack
NCT ID NCT05285631
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tested whether a special heart ultrasound (speckle tracking echocardiography) can predict which patients need an implantable defibrillator (ICD) after a large heart attack. Researchers followed 200 patients for 90 days to see whose heart function stayed low enough to qualify for an ICD. The goal is to identify high-risk patients earlier so they can get life-saving devices sooner.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this could help doctors identify high-risk patients earlier after a heart attack, potentially preventing sudden cardiac death.
What could go wrong
This is a completed observational study, not a treatment trial. The prediction models need further validation before they can be used in routine care.
