Nepal pilot tests early birth control Shot's impact on breastfeeding
NCT ID NCT06816901
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This pilot study in Nepal looked at whether it is possible to run a larger trial on starting the birth control shot DMPA within 48 hours after giving birth. 40 new mothers who wanted DMPA and planned to breastfeed exclusively were enrolled. The main goal was to see if researchers could recruit enough participants, while also tracking how long it took for breast milk to come in and how many women kept using DMPA.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Depo medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA) injection
What this could lead to
If successful, this pilot could pave the way for a larger study that clarifies whether starting DMPA soon after birth is safe for breastfeeding and infant growth.
What could go wrong
This is a very small pilot study (40 people) focused on feasibility, not on proving safety or effectiveness. Results may not apply broadly, and the larger trial may not happen.
