E-Cig nicotine levels may influence how much smokers puff and switch

NCT ID NCT05887947

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026

Summary

This study tested whether different nicotine concentrations in e-cigarettes (5% vs 1.8%) change how much smokers puff, how much nicotine they get, and whether they switch completely from cigarettes. Fifty-two Black and white smokers who wanted to switch to e-cigarettes for 6 weeks took part. Researchers measured puffing patterns and smoking status to see if nicotine strength helps people quit smoking.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Electronic cigarette with 5% or 1.8% nicotine concentration (Vuse Alto)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could help design better e-cigarettes to help people switch away from smoking tobacco cigarettes.

What could go wrong

This was a small, completed study with only 52 people, so results may not apply to everyone. E-cigarettes still carry health risks and are not proven safe for quitting smoking.
