Could a single injection replace weeks of eye drops after retinal surgery?
NCT ID NCT05331664
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether a steroid injection given during retinal detachment surgery can replace the usual course of antibiotic and steroid eye drops afterward. About 168 adults with a first-time retinal detachment will receive either the injection or standard drops. The goal is to see if the injection controls inflammation just as well, potentially simplifying recovery.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
triamcinolone acetonide (Kenalog-40) injection
What this could lead to
If successful, this could simplify recovery after retinal detachment surgery by eliminating the need for daily eye drops, making it easier for patients to follow treatment.
What could go wrong
This is a Phase 4 trial with 168 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. There is a risk that the injection may not control inflammation as well as drops, requiring rescue medication.
