Could a common antibiotic shrink NF2 skin tumors without surgery?

NCT ID NCT05521048

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether injecting doxycycline directly into skin schwannomas can shrink them in people with neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2). Nineteen participants will receive up to three injections per tumor, with the dose based on tumor size. The goal is to find a less invasive alternative to surgery for these painful growths.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

doxycycline

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a non-surgical option to shrink painful skin tumors in people with NF2, reducing the need for surgery.

What could go wrong

This is a small early-phase trial with only 19 people, so results may not apply to everyone. The injections may not shrink tumors or could cause side effects like pain or infection.
