First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This completed pilot study tested whether a very low-carbohydrate diet could lower blood pressure in 64 lower-income African American adults with high blood pressure. Participants followed either a low-carb or standard low-fat diet for 10 months. Researchers measured changes in blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol to see which diet worked better.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
very low carbohydrate diet
What this could lead to
If it works, this could point toward a simple dietary approach to help lower blood pressure in a high-risk community.
What could go wrong
This is a small pilot study with only 64 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. Dietary changes can be hard to stick with long-term.
