Can a Plant-Based diet tame inflammation by reshaping gut bacteria?
NCT ID NCT07283328
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether a low-methionine diet can change the gut microbiome and reduce inflammation in 40 healthy adults. Participants follow a plant-based, low-methionine diet for several weeks, with some also taking methionine supplements or a placebo. Researchers will measure gut bacteria, blood markers, and immune cells to see if the diet shifts the body toward an anti-inflammatory state. The goal is to gather knowledge that could eventually help design dietary strategies for multiple sclerosis.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
methionine-restricted diet
What this could lead to
If successful, this could point toward a dietary approach to reduce inflammation that might help manage multiple sclerosis.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early pilot study in healthy people, not patients. Results may not apply to those with MS, and the diet is restrictive, which could affect adherence.
