Ventilator breathing muscle decline tracked in ICU study

NCT ID NCT05211661

First seen Feb 09, 2026 · Last updated May 13, 2026 · Updated 11 times

Summary

This study looks at how the diaphragm—the main breathing muscle—weakens in patients on a breathing machine (mechanical ventilation) in the ICU. Researchers will use mild nerve stimulation and ultrasound to measure muscle strength and brain control over time. The goal is to understand how quickly this weakness develops and how well patients recover after the breathing tube is removed. 15 adults expected to need ventilation for at least 5 days will participate.
