Sugar water shots could ease stubborn tailbone pain
NCT ID NCT07564167
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether injecting a sugar-water solution (dextrose prolotherapy) into the tailbone area can reduce pain and improve daily function in people with long-lasting coccydynia (tailbone pain). Thirty adults aged 18 to 75 with pain lasting at least 3 months will receive the injections under ultrasound guidance. Researchers will measure pain levels and functional status before treatment and one month after the final injection.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- dextrose prolotherapy (sugar water injections)
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could offer a simple, safe injection option for people with stubborn tailbone pain who haven't gotten relief from other treatments.
- What could go wrong
- This is a very small, early study with only 30 people and no comparison group, so results may not be reliable or apply to everyone. The pain relief may be temporary or no better than placebo.
