Safer sedation for fragile newborns? trial tests alternative to opioids

NCT ID NCT04772222

Summary

This study tested whether a drug called dexmedetomidine is a safe and effective alternative to morphine for managing pain and sedation in newborns with brain injury who are undergoing therapeutic cooling. It involved 50 newborns and aimed to find the right dose and check for safety issues. The goal is to provide better comfort while avoiding potential long-term harms linked to strong opioid painkillers in very young babies.
