Can a steroid implant boost the effect of standard eye injections for hard-to-treat diabetic macular edema?
NCT ID NCT04411693
First seen Jul 29, 2026 · Last updated Jul 30, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This trial investigates whether adding a dexamethasone implant (Ozurdex) to standard aflibercept (Eylea) injections can better control diabetic macular edema that has not responded to anti-VEGF therapy alone. Adults with persistent retinal swelling will receive either the combination or continued aflibercept alone and be followed for six months. The study measures changes in retinal thickness, visual acuity, and the number of injections needed.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- a dexamethasone implant (Ozurdex) added to aflibercept (Eylea) injections
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this combination approach could offer a more effective treatment option for people with diabetic macular edema that does not improve with standard anti-VEGF therapy alone.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-phase trial with only 23 participants, so results may not apply broadly. Adding a steroid implant carries risks such as increased eye pressure or cataract formation.
