Could a common steroid prevent brain damage after carbon monoxide poisoning?

NCT ID NCT06574048

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This early study tests whether adding the steroid dexamethasone to standard hyperbaric oxygen therapy helps prevent long-term brain problems after carbon monoxide poisoning. Twenty adults who receive hyperbaric oxygen will be randomly given either dexamethasone or a placebo. Researchers will track their thinking, memory, and emotions over time to see if the steroid improves recovery.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Dexamethasone

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a simple, low-cost way to reduce long-term brain damage after carbon monoxide poisoning.

What could go wrong

This is a very small, early pilot study with only 20 people. It may not show a clear benefit, and steroids carry risks like infection or blood sugar changes.
