Cooling therapy may shield brain after CO poisoning

NCT ID NCT04975867

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tested whether cooling the body to 33°C for 24 hours, combined with hyperbaric oxygen therapy, improves brain recovery in adults with severe carbon monoxide poisoning. 37 participants were randomly assigned to either therapeutic hypothermia or normothermia (keeping body temperature normal). The goal was to see if cooling reduces long-term neurological damage.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

targeted temperature management (therapeutic hypothermia or normothermia) combined with hyperbaric oxygen therapy

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a better way to prevent long-term brain damage after severe carbon monoxide poisoning.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-phase trial with only 37 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The treatment involves cooling the body, which carries risks like infection or heart issues.
