Asthma attack study seeks best steroid dose for kids
NCT ID NCT07402707
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study compares two different doses of the steroid dexamethasone (0.3 mg/kg vs. 0.6 mg/kg) given by mouth to children aged 4-15 who come to the emergency department with an asthma attack. The goal is to see which dose works better at reducing the need for another steroid prescription within two weeks. The study will also track how often children need to return to the ER or see a doctor, and how well parents and kids tolerate the treatment. It is a small pilot study designed to gather information for a larger, more definitive trial.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
dexamethasone
What this could lead to
If successful, this could help determine the most effective dose of dexamethasone for children with asthma attacks, potentially reducing repeat steroid prescriptions and ER visits.
What could go wrong
This is a small pilot study (104 children) focused on feasibility, not definitive results. The two doses may show no clear difference, and a larger trial is needed to confirm any findings.
