Summary
This trial investigates whether a single 4 mg dose of the steroid dexamethasone, given intravenously before hip fracture surgery, can lower the risk and severity of postoperative delirium in adults aged 60 and older. Delirium is a sudden state of confusion that often occurs after major surgery in older patients and can lead to longer hospital stays and worse outcomes. The study compares dexamethasone to a placebo in a double-blind fashion, meaning neither patients nor doctors know who receives the active drug.
