First seen Jun 30, 2026 · Last updated Jul 01, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study explores whether a type of talk therapy called behavioral activation, delivered via video call, can help older adults who are involved with Adult Protective Services due to neglect or self-neglect. The therapy aims to reduce depression and apathy, and improve daily activities. Fifty participants will receive either standard APS services or the therapy sessions, and researchers will measure changes in mood and self-care.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
Behavioral Activation therapy delivered via telehealth
What this could lead to
If successful, this could provide a practical, evidence-based treatment option for depression in older adults experiencing neglect or self-neglect.
What could go wrong
This is a small feasibility study with only 50 participants, so results may not apply broadly. The therapy requires active participation and access to a device for telehealth.
