New TB drug combo shows promise in early trial

NCT ID NCT04550832

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026

Summary

This phase IIb trial tested an experimental antibiotic called delpazolid, added to a standard three-drug regimen (bedaquiline, delamanid, moxifloxacin), in 76 adults with newly diagnosed, drug-sensitive pulmonary tuberculosis. The main goals were to check safety and how the drug levels in the body relate to its effects. Results help determine the right dose for future studies, but the trial was not designed to prove a cure.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

delpazolid (an experimental antibiotic) combined with bedaquiline, delamanid, and moxifloxacin

What this could lead to

If successful, this could lead to a shorter, more effective treatment regimen for drug-sensitive tuberculosis.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-phase trial (76 participants) focused on safety and dosing, not on cure rates. The experimental drug is not yet licensed, and side effects or lack of added benefit are possible.
