Could a diabetes pill protect kidneys in lupus patients?
NCT ID NCT07323524
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether dapagliflozin, a drug already used for diabetes and other kidney diseases, can help people with lupus nephritis. About 33 adults with active lupus kidney inflammation will receive either dapagliflozin or a placebo alongside their usual treatment. The main goal is to see if it's feasible to run a larger trial, not yet to prove the drug works.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Dapagliflozin
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could point toward a new way to protect kidneys in people with lupus nephritis, reducing the risk of kidney failure.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small pilot study with only 33 people, so results may not apply broadly. It's testing feasibility, not yet proven to work, and side effects are possible.
