Quick gene test may personalize stroke care

NCT ID NCT06943586

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study looks at whether a fast genetic test can help doctors pick the best blood-thinning medication for people who have had a minor stroke or a high-risk mini-stroke (TIA). The test checks a gene called CYP2C19, which affects how the body processes certain antiplatelet drugs. Researchers will see if they can get test results within 6 hours during a hospital stay. About 200 adults will take part, and they will be followed for 90 days to check for new strokes or recovery.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

CYP2C19 genotype guided dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show that bedside genetic testing is feasible and may help doctors choose the right antiplatelet drug for each stroke patient, potentially reducing future strokes.

What could go wrong

This is a small feasibility study, not designed to prove that genetic testing improves outcomes. The 6-hour turnaround for results is challenging, and the approach may not work in all hospitals.
