New heart risk check could spot danger earlier

NCT ID NCT05294419

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times

Summary

This study tested a new tool called the Cardiovascular Integrated Risk Tool (CVD IRT) in GP surgeries to see if it could be easily used during routine NHS Health Checks. Over 800 people aged 45-64 took part. The goal was to see if the tool works in real-world primary care and if doctors and patients find it useful.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Cardiovascular Integrated Risk Tool (CVD IRT) - a device that combines multiple risk factors to estimate heart disease risk

What this could lead to

If successful, this tool could be used in GP surgeries to better identify people at high risk of heart disease, allowing earlier prevention.

What could go wrong

This was a small, early-stage feasibility study, not a large trial proving the tool improves health outcomes. The tool may not be adopted widely or may not work as well in other settings.
