Turmeric suppositories could replace surgery for anal precancer
NCT ID NCT06626230
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This early-stage trial tests whether curcumin (the active ingredient in turmeric) can reverse high-grade anal precancerous lesions in people living with HIV. Participants insert curcumin capsules into the anus daily for 14 days. The main goal is to find the safest dose, not yet to prove it works. If successful, it might offer a gentler alternative to current treatments like heat ablation or surgery.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
curcumin (turmeric extract) capsules inserted intra-anally
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a non-invasive, low-toxicity option to reverse anal precancerous cells in people with HIV, potentially avoiding surgery or ablation.
What could go wrong
This is a very early Phase 1 trial with only 48 participants, focused on safety and dosing—not yet on effectiveness. Curcumin may not work or could cause side effects at higher doses.
