Can lung blood vessels heal after a procedure? new study investigates

NCT ID NCT05719415

First seen Jun 26, 2026 ยท Last updated Jun 26, 2026

Summary

This study looks at how well tiny blood vessels in the lungs recover after a procedure called balloon pulmonary angioplasty (BPA) in people with chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH). CTEPH is a condition where old blood clots block lung arteries, making it hard to breathe. BPA opens those arteries, but it's unclear if the downstream capillaries regain function. Researchers will measure capillary surface area before and after BPA in 40 patients to find out.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ€” not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to
If successful, this could help doctors understand how well lung blood vessels recover after the procedure, potentially guiding better treatment decisions for CTEPH patients.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage observational study with only 40 participants. It measures a biomarker, not direct health outcomes, so results may not change treatment or predict patient recovery.
