Freezing lung nodules: a new alternative to surgery?

NCT ID NCT06848881

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study compares two treatments for small lung spots called ground-glass nodules: cryoablation (freezing the nodule) and thoracoscopic surgery (removing it). Researchers want to see which approach is safer and better at preventing the nodules from coming back. About 160 adults with nodules 8-20mm in size will take part.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
Cryoablation (freezing procedure) and thoracoscopic surgery
What this could lead to
If cryoablation works as well as surgery, it could offer a less invasive option for treating early lung nodules, with faster recovery and fewer complications.
What could go wrong
This is a relatively small, early-stage study (160 people). Cryoablation may not be as effective as surgery at preventing cancer from coming back, and there could be unknown risks.
