Hip surgery showdown: to stitch or not to stitch the capsule?

NCT ID NCT03372564

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study looks at whether repairing the hip capsule (a layer of tissue around the joint) after keyhole hip surgery leads to better outcomes than leaving it unrepaired. About 250 adults aged 18 to 50 with hip pain from femoroacetabular impingement will be randomly assigned to one of two groups. The main goal is to see if hip function improves more at 6 months in the repair group.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Hip capsule repair (surgical procedure)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show that repairing the hip capsule after arthroscopy leads to better hip function and less pain than leaving it unrepaired.

What could go wrong

This is a relatively small, early-stage trial (250 participants) and the results may not apply to all patients. There is also a risk that repairing the capsule could cause stiffness or other complications.
