Could a single shot stop deadly meningitis in HIV patients?

NCT ID NCT03945448

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether adding one dose of a stronger antifungal drug (liposomal amphotericin) to the standard treatment (fluconazole) can prevent cryptococcal meningitis in HIV-positive adults who test positive for the fungus but have no symptoms. About 356 participants in Uganda will be randomly assigned to receive either the enhanced therapy or standard care alone. The goal is to see if the stronger treatment reduces the number of people who develop meningitis over 24 weeks.
